General Information

HARFORD COUNTY COUNCIL OF PTA, Inc.:

The Purposes of this Council are:

  1. To unify and strengthen local PTAs comprising the Council.
  2. To provide for the conference and cooperation of the local PTAs/PTSAs in the council membership so as to create a public opinion favorable to the interests of child welfare; to encourage child welfare projects in the various local units; and to assist in the formation of new PTAs according to the plan of the Maryland PTA.
  3. To promote the interests of the National PTA and of the Maryland PTA within its territory.
  4. To promote the interests of its members by providing information, support, and continued encouragement to parents as they discover the educational process in Harford County and become advocates for their children.
  5. To encourage parental involvement and parent education concerning the functions of each level of PTA.

 Established in 1939 as a federation of the PTAs in Harford County
 Serves as a key link between the local PTA, Maryland PTA, and National PTA
 Provides background information on issues affecting children and youth
 Presents an Annual Legislative Night during which parents and teachers have the opportunity to interact and get to know our local and state elected officials.
 Provides Leadership Training workshops for local PT(S)A Officers and Committee Chairs
 Assists in the formation of new PT(S)As
 Maintains a directory of all the PT(S)As of Harford County
 Publishes the HCCPTA News & Review
 Mobilizes PTA membership throughout the county on countywide, state, and national issues affecting children and youth
 Testifies before the School Board, the County Executive, and the County Council
 Presents prioritized countywide educational budgetary concerns to the Board and County Council
 Adopts positions on proposed state legislation and works with our elected officials in Annapolis
 Arranges bus transportation to PTA Night in Annapolis, an annual gathering of parents and teachers from around the state
 Presents workshops for local PT(S)As on topics of interest such as "Safe & Secure Learning Environment," Parent Involvement, High School Assessments, Technology, Preventative Parenting, Child Advocacy, and Team-Building
 Has co-sponsored, with Harford County's Office of Technology and Information Services (OTIS), the Annual Technology Fair, presenting the latest in technology being used in County Schools, child safety on the net, and vendors willing to provide answers to parental questions
 Sponsors Yearly Countywide Presentations to benefit the entire County Community (i.e. Health & Safety Fair, Kids Need Futures....Not Funerals)
 Works with HCPS to provide parent representatives for task forces, study groups, and committees, and disseminates information about changes in the school system, about school board policies, and state actions
 Is represented by an Executive Committee made up of experienced and knowledgeable Officers, Principal and Teacher Representatives, and Standing Committee Chairs
 Supports the Local PT(S)A units individually and as a whole
 Coordinates the National Reflections program throughout the County
 Sponsors an Annual Vendors Fair for Local Units
